Counseling

“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing but let us encourage one another—and all the more as we see the day approaching.” —Hebrews 10:23-25

Counseling is the work of men and women in the body of Christ working together to edify the saints and to remove those obstacles that hinder us from effectively worshipping God. It is more a reflection of our character in Christ than in training. It is a natural part of life of the church and is not primarily an auxiliary service that professionals perform.

Effective counseling occurs on three separate levels:

Level I
All members of the body are called to encourage one another and to "spur one another on to love and good deeds." This is done through mutual ministry working alongside each other, sharing with one another and concentrated prayer, helping people become more sensitive and more loving.

Level II
People who have demonstrated Christian maturity (a proven Christian walk), a basic knowledge of and obedience to to the Word of God, interpersonal sensitivity, and gifts of discernment, and who are willing to work under the Session to help people deal with the "tough issues" of living the Christian life—often elders, deacons and Covenant Group facilitators.

Level III
A professional counselor who is biblically and properly trained to deal with deeper emotional and psychological issues. The professional counselor functions as an extension of the shepherding care of the fellowship and is accountable to the elders for his ministry and counsel. Members of the session meet regularly with the counselor to pray for the needs of the people and to consider other ways to assist in creating encouragements and supports for healing and nurturing. All matters discussed are held in strict confidence with the elders. People requesting professional counsel are asked to sign a release of information form to allow the counselor to consult with the elders.

NOTE: Dr. Mark Good is currently available to meet with people at the church on Mondays. If anyone is interested in receiving counseling, he or she should contact an elder, who will in turn refer them to Dr. Good as they deem appropriate. The cost for this service is worked out with Dr. Good on an individual basis and supplemented by the church when needed.
